Sofia Cardenas Obituary

Donna - Sofia M. Cardenas, 87, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2023 at her home in Donna, TX.  Funeral arrangements are under the care of Hawkins Funeral Home in Donna.

Sofia “Lulú” Cárdenas, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, June 25 at the age of 87. She was surrounded by her loving family, who were by her side as she transitioned from this life to the next. Born in Donna, Texas on March 11, 1936, Lulú was the only child of Rodolfo and Lydia Medina. Soon after graduating from Donna High School, Lulú married the love of her life, Raul Cárdenas, and they were happily married for 31 years until his death in 1988.

Lulú was a devoted wife and mother who loved to cook and host many special occasions for family and friends. In addition to being an exceptional mother, Lulú along with her husband, owned and operated the family business, Cash and Carry Drive-In Grocery Store for 28 years. She took great pride in everything she did from treating her customers with quality customer service to beautifully decorating her home interior and her yard on Main Street. Lulú was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Donna where she was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She was a charter member and an active member for forty- three years, for Court Rev. Daniel J. Tuohy #2215.

Lulú and her late husband, Raul, loved to travel in the states and Mexico. After his death, she visited many places with her children and grandchildren. She fulfilled her dream of touring Europe, where she witnessed many beautiful cathedrals and historical sites. Lulú was preceded in death by her husband Raul R. Cárdenas, parents Rodolfo and Lydia Medina, and her oldest grandson Omar David Montalvo. Lulú is survived by her four children: Lavinia Montalvo (Ernesto Gonzalez Jr.), Rudy Cárdenas (Delia), Lucy Trevino (George), and Lillian Cordova (Norman Jr.).

She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and sister-in-law Anita Singleterry, along with many nephews, nieces, and cousins. Lulú was affectionately known as “Bama” by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She had a strong faith in God and lived her life with kindness and compassion for others. She will be remembered for her kind heart, her infectious smile, and her unwavering strength. For every challenge she faced throughout her life, she persevered with grace and dignity. She was an inspiration to her family and others and will be deeply missed. May her soul rest in eternal peace and may the perpetual light shine upon her.

The pallbearers will be Carlo Cordova, Andre Cordova, Ivón Gonzalez, Rudy Cárdenas Jr., Norman Cordova III, Isaac Escobedo, and Luis Bermudez.
