Donna - Ruth S. Lopez, 96, passed away on Sunday, May 14, 2023 at Legends Transitional Care Center in McAllen, TX.  Funeral arrangements are under the care of Hawkins Funeral Home in Donna.

In Loving Memory of Ruth Salas Lopez

Ruth Salas Lopez, a woman of unwavering faith and boundless love for her family, peacefully passed away on May 14, 2023 at the age of 96. Born on March 30,1927 in Grand Junction, CO, she made Donna, TX her cherished home where she raised her family. 

Ruth was the youngest girl of eight siblings. At a young age she left middle school to care for her ill mother. This early experience shaped her values and taught her the importance of family, instilling in her a remarkable sense of  strength, independence and perseverance, traits that would remain with her throughout her life.  

Ruth’s unwavering Christian faith was the guiding light of her life. She found joy and strength in the Bible, faithfully reading its teachings daily. She shared her love for Christ with her family, serving as their first Bible school teacher imparting faith, love and the invaluable lessons contained within the scriptures. Ruth’s heart overflowed with blessings and prayers for family and friends, a testament to her deep faith and love for those she held dear. 

At the heart of her home, Ruth’s kitchen was a cherished gathering place where family would come together not only to visit and engage in heartfelt conversations but also to joyously celebrate holidays and birthdays over the years. Ruth’s cooking was a reflection of her love and her apple pie became legendary among family and friends. Her meals were always infused with love, turning even the simplest dishes into something extraordinary. 

Gardening and nature brought Ruth immense joy and tranquility. She could often be found in her garden nurturing her plants and flowers with tender care. She found solace and peace amidst the beauty of nature. 

Ruth’s love for her family knew no bounds.  Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in her heart and she delighted in their presence.  A skilled quilter, Ruth created beautiful quilts for each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Each stitch was a testament to her creativity and the warmth she wished to bestow upon her loved ones.

Ruth is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Maximino P. Lopez. 

She is survived by her children: Michael Ruben Lopez (Delia); Virginia “Jeannie” Silva (✝ Rudy); Luis Lopez (Melinda); Ana Galvan (Mario); and Irene Ybarra (Gilberto) along with 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

As we say farewell to Ruth, we take solace in knowing that she is reunited with her husband and other loved ones who have gone before her. Her memory will forever be cherished by her family and friends as they carry her legacy of love, strength and unwavering faith in their hearts.
