Reymundo Quiroga Obituary

Weslaco - Reymundo Quiroga, 49, passed away Friday, September 3, 2021.  Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hawkins Funeral Home in Donna.

On September 3rd, 2021 Reymundo “Rey” Quiroga joined his mom in heaven after battling with COVID-19 at the age of 49. The world lost a great dad, husband, brother, son, uncle and teacher. He was loved not only by his family and friends, but his students and anyone acquainted with him.

Rey is preceded in death by his mother, Maria De La Luz Delgado. He is survived by his wife, Rachel Handy Quiroga, his father Lionel Quiroga, his children Jonathan Ray and Maria De La Luz Ramirez, Franco and Rachel Guerra, and Reymundo and Leanna Quiroga II, and his granddaughter, Emma Joelle Quiroga.

Rey was born in Weslaco, Texas on November 30th, 1971 to Lionel and Maria de La Luz Quiroga. He joined the Army in 1989, and he married his high school sweetheart on Valentine’s Day 1991. In the year 1994, Rey and Rachel welcomed their first daughter Maria De La Luz and in 1995, their twins also named Rachel and Reymundo. He was an amazing father and husband, and he would often display his love for his family in ways the whole community could see. His devotion to his family was apparent to everyone around him, and he would beam with pride when he would talk about his wife and kids.

He served Donna Independent School District for 32 years, starting at the age of 18 as a paraprofessional clerical aid at the main office. He later worked in the IT department and as an assistant coach at Guzman Elementary in 1990. After graduating from the University of Texas Pan-American in Kinesiology in 1999, he was hired to teach at Veterans Middle School in Donna, Texas, where he worked until his passing. At VMS, he taught 8th grade science, 7th grade science and biology. He also influenced students in various clubs and organizations such as NJHS, UIL and ACE. In addition, he coached Football and Soccer.

In 2005, he went back to the University of Texas-Pan American to complete his masters degree with an emphasis in Physics. He graduated with honors in December of 2006.

Rey prided himself as a “workaholic” and often took on multiple professions. In the early 90’s he also worked as a manager and lifeguard at the Donna city pool. He served as a deputy and later a peace officer in the Weslaco Police Department from 1995 to 1996. He even took on the challenge to run for county judge in the 1990’s. Though he took pride in his work, Rey always put his family first.

He enjoyed fixing and collecting classic cars. He frequently attended car shows and displayed his collection of Mopar cars, especially his iconic Road Runner. Rey was a hard worker, and he enjoyed occupying his time fixing his cars and making additions to his shop.

Rey was always an early bird. He enjoyed cooking for not only his children, but his in-laws, brothers, nieces and nephews. He will always be remembered for making the best breakfast and a wide variety of different ethnic foods that would require skill and preparation such as menudo and caldo de pollo and caldo de res.

Visitation will take place Saturday, September 11th and Sunday, September 12th from 9 am - 8 pm at the Hawkins Funeral Home on 501 N Salinas Blvd, Donna, TX 78537. Graveside funeral service will be on Monday, September 13th at the Val Verde Cemetery on 6200 Val Verde Rd, Donna, TX 78537 at 1pm.
