South Padre Island - Nydia Ann Gonzalez, 69, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2024. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Hawkins Funeral Home.
Nydia Ann Gonzalez
January 30, 1955 – May 27, 2024
It is with heavy hearts we announce that Nydia Ann Gonzalez passed away on May 27, 2024. She will be remembered for her boisterous laughter, generous spirit, sense of adventure and storytelling, and dedication to inclusivity of all people and cultures.
Nydia graduated from Edcouch High School in 1973, received her Bachelors in Political Science & Government from North Texas University and Executive Master of Science in Human Resource Development from the University of Houston.
During the course of her career, Nydia has held several diversity leadership roles in academic healthcare, higher education and in corporate America for organizations such as Dell Technologies, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Yale University and JPS Health Network. Additionally, Nydia spent a number of years working in Japan and Indonesia that left an indelible mark translating into a lifetime of appreciation that was reflected in her personality and career.
Nydia spent her retirement years back in the Rio Grande Valley on South Padre Island (SPI) where she found a community of friendship and love amongst the many talented musicians, local residents, workers and business owners - a family of the heart.
She is preceded in death by her late mother and father, Armando and Eva Gonzalez and late grandparents Merced and Guadalupe Salinas Escobar and Jacinto and Natalia Lozano Gonzalez. She is survived by numerous family members, loved ones and communities of friends in Texas and across the US and Asia.
Hawkins Funeral Home of Weslaco has arranged an internment graveside service at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery 6705 N. FM 88, Weslaco, TX, on June 22, at 10:00 am where Nydia’s ashes will be laid to rest next to her parents.
An open house reception will follow later in the day (June 22) on South Padre Island at 4:00 – 6:00 pm where we welcome friends and family to share their thoughts and stories about Nydia in celebration of her life.
