Houston - Monica Munoz, 51, passed away Friday, January 19, 2024 at her home in Houston, TX. Funeral services are under the direction of Hawkins Funeral Home in Donna.
Monica grew up in Donna, Texas. She was the only child of Edelmiro Munoz and Maria Alicia Perez Munoz. Monica was also the only grandchild of Genoveva Perez whose world revolved around her beautiful granddaughter, Moni. Monica's love for her parents and MaGen was always present in the way she lived life and honored their memory. They were everything to each other. She wanted to make them proud. And she did.
Monica attended the various schools of Donna ISD. She grew up with many of the same classmates from elementary all the way to high school and even college. She graduated from Donna High School, and was part of the Class of 1991. She attended the University of Houston in the fall of 1991. Monica made many friends along the way in college, and she fell in love with the city. She called Houston home for the next 30 plus years. Monica worked as a translator. She worked as a translator in schools and medical facilities. Her work even took her to Kelsey Seybold where she translated in Spanish for international patients who come to the US seeking specialized medical treatments.
To say that Monica loved music, singing and dance is an understatement. Monica's love of music was fostered by her parents, Her father often played the guitar for her and even composed music dedicated to Monica. Her mother often joined in the singing as well. Monica studied ballet, folklorico, and jazz with Doria Avila in McAllen. She spent many hours in dance class and rehearsals for her many dance recitals. She was proud to be in Doria Avila's production of the Nutcracker as a young girl. Her love of music and dance continued through high school where she was involved in choir.
She was a movie enthusiast and of course musicals were some of her favorites. She had collections of movie soundtracks and knew the words to just about any song that played on the radio. Concerts and music festivals were one of her favorite pastimes too. Music just spoke to her heart.
Monica was a great story teller and had a memory like no one else. She captivated a room with her stories and could keep you laughing for hours. Her laughter was infectious and her expressiveness just drew you in.
Monica's greatest legacy that she leaves us is her unwavering faith. No matter what she faced in life, she did it with a smile, grace and positivity. Her love of Jesus Christ gave her the strength to overcome anything that came her way. Her Catholic faith sustained her. She inspired others to believe as well. She was always praying for others , not giving a second thought to her own troubles. She served in the St. Joseph Chapter of Junior Catholic Daughters of the Americas as a young girl. She served as a lector in the church as well. Moni always expressed her faith in God and she believed without hesitation that she would one day be healed.
Monica never met a stranger. She carried on a conversation with anyone like they had known each other for a lifetime. Once you became her friend, you had a friend for life in her.
The family would like to thank Rosario Azcorra for all the good that she did for Monica for all those years. She took great care of Monica, she made sure to take her to all her doctor's visits, spent countless hours with her in the hospital, during all those times that Monica had to be admitted to the hospital. She was close family and like a sister to Monica.
