Weslaco- Michael V. Doorley, 81, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2025 in Donna, TX. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hawkins Funeral Home.
Michael Victor Doorley 81 entered into eternal life on Saturday March 1, 2025. Mike was a gentle soul; a quiet man with a heart of gold, generous to all and a cherished member of his community. Mike was born September 8, 1943 in Waterloo Iowa to Victor E. Doorley and Joanna O’Mara. He is preceded in death by his parents and stepfather Hal Halford.
Mike went through dual seminary formation studying to be a Dominican and Diocesan Priest, but the Lord had other plans for him, and he devoted his life to serving the Lord as a lay ministry member. Mike received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and joked that he had his MD because of his initials. After the seminary, Mike became a High School Spanish teacher who went above and beyond for his students. Mike spoke fondly of an immersion trip which he planned to Monterrey Mexico and fell in love with Mexican Culture. After his time as an educator, Mike pursued a degree in nursing and worked as a nurse at the Rio Grande State Center for many years until his retirement.
After retirement, Mike attended daily mass and gathered with members of his Parish for breakfast at Fiesta Tex-Mex. Mike also faithfully served at St. Pius X as a sacristan for various priests. Mike served his community as a Religious Education teacher; he volunteered his time to be part of the counting group at St. Pius X and was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mike loved to travel, he was able to go to on various pilgrimages to Italy, Spain, Portugal, and France however his visit to Ireland was his most memorable. Mike was extremely proud of the fact that he was 100% Irish and he spoke often of his visit to his ancestral homeland.
When asked how he was, Mike’s favorite response was “Mighty Fine.” Knowledgeable and inquisitive by nature, Mike loved going to Whataburger early in the morning to read the Monitor and catch up on the latest news; he also made sure to stay informed watching CNN. Mike was an avid reader and he loved to be outside, he lifted weights, enjoyed swimming and spending time gardening. Mike loved telling jokes, listening to music of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s and going to the movies. Although he was an only child Mike never lacked for family when he met his partner Linda, he inherited a large family. Mike could be found taking in the hustle and bustle of every family function, with a cup of coffee in hand.
Mike left his imprint on our hearts and will be greatly missed. Mike had a special devotion to the blessed mother and was honored that they shared the same birthday, he devoted many hours of prayer and offered up countless rosaries at the adoration chapel for the petitions of those in need. His loved ones are requesting that in memory of Mike that you sign up for a perpetual hour of adoration at St. Pius X. Our special thanks to New Life Assisted Living and New Age Hospice for giving Mike the utmost care and serving with love in every interaction.
