Mary Lugo Obituary

Donna - Mary Diane Lugo, 78, passed away Monday, September 16, 2024 at her residence in Donna, TX.  Funeral arrangements are under the care of Hawkins Funeral Home in Donna.

Mary Diane Lugo is safe in the arms of her Lord and Savior.  She gained her heavenly wings on Monday, September 16, 2024, peacefully at her home surrounded by family.  Leaving behind a beautiful legacy, Diane was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

Diane was born May 2, 1946 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin to Gertrude and Alan Weber.  Fate would bring her to find her soulmate, Joe Lugo, in Donna, Texas in the summer of 1961.  Joe and Diane were inseparable for 60 years.  Their marriage was the epitome of what God’s love means, showing forgiveness, respect and commitment.  Attributes that were apparent to anyone that had the pleasure to be around them cherishing each other and the love they shared.  What a profound honor it was to watch them kiss and hold hands until the long goodbye was over.

Forever blessed to have had the chance to call her mother are her daughters, Jo Anne (Lino) Samudio, Liza (Fred) Nunez, Lora (Mickey) Hinojosa, Christie Jo Lugo (Philip) Waldron, also Cathy and Eli Alvarado.  Left to treasure their affectionately known as “YaYa” are grandchildren Lino Joseph, James, Alexandra, Sarah, Michael, Christian, Connor, angel Patrick, Goddaughter Julissa Perez and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Her memory will remain a guiding light for her family. Perfect wife and loving mother, there was nothing she couldn’t do.  Everything she touched was better for it.  Best gardener, BBQ master, party planner, decorator, animal whisperer, baker, broken heart healer, family glue and referee.  That was any given Saturday in the Lugo home.  A mother to all that needed one. A cool touch on a feverish forehead.  A soft place to land in personal crisis and the kick in the rear-end when you needed to just fight harder.  She may have been the originator of “Let Them.”

Diane was a member of Theta Sigma Sorority where she served her community with grace and integrity.  She was a volunteer aerobics instructor (with stamina that put teenagers to shame), Girl Scout leader, skillful painter and amazing cook.  Her first and only job, Diane worked for Donna ISD for 37 years.  It was there that she would create life-long friendships and become a beloved figure to all that knew her.

No formal services have been planned. Losing her in slow motion was heart wrenching.  A cruel and thief of a disease caused such anguish. Therefore; we ask that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association via Diane Lugo tribute page.

Diane Lugo Tribute

Special thanks to her devoted caregivers Ana Herevia and Luisa Casas who both treated her like their own.  Tirelessly, they catered to her every need.  Grateful for Alora Hospice and the divine intervention of nurse Raul Carrillo that guided us through those tough final hours.

A part of us went with you when you left.  “Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was; and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.” Ecc. 12:7
