With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Maria “Mary” De Las Luz Gonzales, on March 28, 2025. She was a loving, kind, and strong soul who brought warmth and joy to everyone who knew her.

Born on January 2, 1976, in Weslaco, Texas, Mary was raised in Donna, Texas, where she built a lifetime of beautiful memories. She graduated from Donna High School in 1994, already shining as a compassionate and vibrant soul who had a way of making every space feel warmer with her presence. Mary’s spirit was a perfect blend of kindness, humor, and generosity, always lifting the hearts of those around her. Her unwavering love and devotion to family and friends were at the core of who she was, making her not just unforgettable, but truly irreplaceable.

In her early years, Mary experienced the challenges of migrant labor, traveling with our family to work camps up north. As the eldest sibling, she naturally took on a leadership role, often caring for her younger siblings while our parents worked tirelessly. She became the first English speaker in our home, stepping into the role of interpreter for our parents and helping them navigate language barriers with confidence and grace. From a young age, Mary showed resilience, independence, and natural desire to uplift those around her.

Determined to carve her own path, she transitioned from migrant work to a job at the Weslaco WalMart before it became a supercenter. She thrived there, working at the help desk, as a cashier, and eventually in the pharmacy. With her father and brother as coworkers, work often felt like a family reunion, filled with shared moments and laughter.

But Mary had bigger dreams. She pursued her passion for healthcare by enrolling at South Texas College (formerly STCC), earning her certification in nursing. Caring for others wasn’t just a job for Mary, it was her calling. She poured her heart into her work as a home health nurse, often taking on multiple patients and agencies at a time. She was a giver in every sense of the word, dedicating herself to the well being of others with boundless compassion.

Mary is survived by her father, Francisco Gonzales Sr.;her brother, Francisco Gonzales Jr.; sister-in-law, Maricela; sister, Sonia Gonzales; husband, Mario Bueso; son, Brayan Hernandez; nephew, Francisco Gonzales III; niece, Natalie Victoria Gonzales; and nephew, Jaramiah De’Angelo Perez, all of whom will forever cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her mother, Maria Fernanda Gonzales; paternal grandparents, Jose F. and Maria P. Gonzales; and maternal grandparents, Florentino and Maria A. Flores

She had a gift for making people feel special, especially her godchildren, nieces, nephews, and any child lucky enough to be in her presence. She showered them with love, surprises, and endless fun, always going out of her way to bring smiles to their faces. One of the greatest blessings in her life was the gift of her stepson, Brayan, stepping into her world and bringing her immense joy. She was so proud of him and all of his accomplishments, cherishing every moment they share.

Maria’s adventurous soul led her to explore new places, dive into exciting experiences, and find joy in the little things, She cherished every moment spent with family and friends, turning even the simplest gatherings into unforgettable celebrations. Whether it was a feeling the ocean breeze, planning the perfect poolside stay, dancing to her favorite songs, backyard bbq, any birthday party or holiday festivity, she embraced life and always ready to make memories.

Mary’s legacy is one of love, dedication, and selflessness. She leaves us with countless cherished memories, and anyone who had the privilege of knowing her would agree. She was an extraordinary woman, a true caregiver, and a source of strength for so many. Her presence will be deeply missed, but the love she shared will live on in our hearts forever.

A celebration of Mary’s beautiful life will be held on Thursday, April 3, at Hawkins Funeral Home in Donna, TX, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Family and friends are invited to gather in her honor, sharing memories and the love she so freely gave.

A rosary will be held at 6 p.m., followed by a mariachi tribute at 7 p.m., a fitting farewell to a woman who brought so much joy to those around her.

Though she may no longer walk beside us, her spirit, laughter, and endless love will forever be a part of our lives.
