Donna - Leandro Martinez,  88,  Passed away on Friday, May 22, 2020. Funeral services for Mr. Martinez are being entrusted with Hawkins Funeral Home in Donna.

Leandro Martinez, age 88, entered into eternal rest on May 22, 2020 at his home in Donna, TX.  He was born in Donna on February 27, 1932 to Sotero Martinez and Jesus Garcia.  He attended Donna schools and McAllen Business College.  Leandro is preceded in death by his parents, Sotero and Jesus Martinez, two sisters, Hilda (Lee) Munoz, Beth (Pete) Flores, a brother, Arturo (Hortencia) Martinez, and a son, Francisco Xavier.

Leandro served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and received an honorable discharge.  He was employed by the Weslaco School District as supervisor in the maintenance department and retired after 31 years of service.  During his retirement years he served his community as a member and chairman of the Planning and Zoning Board for the City of Donna and the Board of Directors of the Donna Hooks Fletcher Historical Museum.  In addition, he served as a volunteer in several service organizations such as the Aurora House Foundation, a home for the terminally ill in Weslaco, San Juan Village, a public housing project, the Donna museum, and various other organizations.

Leandro was a true outdoorsman.  He spent many winter weekends deer hunting in the western part of the Rio Grande Valley or in the Uvalde County in the beautiful hill country of Texas.  During the warmer months of the year he enjoyed fishing in the South Padre Island-Port Isabel area and Port Mansfield in Willacy County.

Leandro is survived by his wife, Guadalupe, a son, Leandro David Martinez (Hilda), a grand-daughter, Victoria Araceli Martinez, and a great-grandson, Alexander David, Weslaco.  In addition, he is survived by two brothers, Hector (Yolanda) and Gabriel (Beatriz), a brother-in-law, Daniel Rodriguez (Celia) of Ft. Worth, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom were very special to him.

​The family would like to thank the staff of the Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Nursing Home, McAllen, Texas for their caring and untiring services to Mr. Martinez.  In addition, the family expresses very special thanks to Allstate Hospice of McAllen.  Their nursing staff rendered very special services to the patient and were great comfort and support to the family.  During his roundabout trip home to his residence in Donna, Leandro made one last stop at Aurora House of Weslaco, a place where he had served as a first responder in recent years.  There, the staff card for him with utmost concern and kindness.  From the Martinez family to the Aurora House team, thanks!
