Juventino Porras Garcia

Mr. Juventino (Tino) Porras Garcia, age 89, of Mercedes, Texas, passed away peacefully Saturday evening, April 12, 2025. Tino was born in San Perlita, Willacy County, Texas to Nasario Garcia, Sr and Manuela Porras(Gonzalez)

He is preceded in death by his grandson Jeremy Lee Garcia; three brothers, Nemecio, Nasario, and Francisco; three sisters, Maria Santos Garcia, Elecia Garcia, and Maria Serna.

Tino is survived by his wife of 68 years Dorothy Mae of Mercedes, his daughter Diana Mae Costilla (Candelario) of Mercedes, son Rodrick Joseph (Norma) of Corpus Christi, son Omar (Cynthia) of Alamo, and son Aaron Rene Garcia, Sr. (Rachel) of Indiana; several grandchildren; several great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; one brother Ricardo of Pharr; and two sisters, Antonia Ybarra of Toledo, Ohio, Alicia Garcia of Mercedes.

Tino worked as a migrant farm worker, worked at the local Esso gasoline station, fixed toasters and small appliances, worked for the city water plant, became a swimming pool technician, service manager, and business owner. Ultimately, he enjoyed the challenges of building swimming pools all over the RGV leaving his work in the ground for generations to enjoy. One of his proudest milestones was when he tested to become one of the first licensed landscape irrigators #337 in the State of Texas with only his 6th grade education in a roomful of college graduates. He enjoyed reading about history and keeping his mind sharp by doing math problems in his head.

Visitation is from 11 am to 8 pm on Monday April 21, 2025 at Hawkings Funeral Home, Weslaco, Texas.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, with visitation at 8 am and Mass at Our Lady of Mercy Mercedes at 10 am.  Burial will follow at 11 am in the Highland Memorial Cemetery in Weslaco.‍
