Josefa Mendoza Carmona, affectionately known as “Chepa”, was born on March 19, 1939 in Brownsville, Texas to Jesus Mendoza and Sofia Perez. She was raised by her paternal grandmother, Concepcion Ramos, and her beloved Tia Maria.
She married Juan Carmona Jr., on December 11, 1959. They met one weekend during one of her walks in downtown Weslaco.
She raised 5 children - Lidia, Grace, Irma, Daniel and Linda; it is to be noted that Josefa and Juan lost a child in infancy, whose name was Daniel.
She knew the value of hard work. She started working in the fields at a young age, then worked in a seatbelt factory while she lived in Chicago. She then returned to the valley to again work in the fields alongside her family. She is now reunited with her husband, Juan Carmona Jr., her children, Lidia and Daniel, her parents, grandparents, Tia Maria, brothers: Jimmy, Ramon, and Jesse, and her sister, Lupe.
She is survived by three daughters: Grace (Jorge), Irma, and Linda (Martin), one son: Daniel (Norma), her brother Jose Mendoza, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.
