George Alton Obituary

Weslaco - George Armando Alton, 81, passed away on Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hawkins Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Our dad, George Alton, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday morning, October 6, 2022.  He had just celebrated his 81st birthday a few weeks before.

George was born on September 15, 1941 to Daniel R. Alton and Theodosia Diaz in Maduro, Tamaulipas and immigrated to Weslaco, Texas as a young boy.  Here he would attend elementary and middle school, and begin a family at a young age. Life and ambition led him to California where he began working for Pep Boys Auto at various locations throughout the west coast. It was during this time that he again married, divorced, and eventually married again.  Finally, George relocated back to his hometown and spent the rest of his days living in Weslaco, providing for his family and children. He spent many years working with Burton Auto Supply and then Holt Company before retiring.

Dad was a man of many talents and hobbies.  After retiring, you would find him enjoying his favorite past times like playing his guitar by ear and singing along (rather well, I might add), or working on various projects around the house, tending to the yard, washing and detailing his car, or enjoying home-cooked meals and spending time with his loved ones. Sometimes Dad’s days were quieter and he would watch tv and fall asleep in his favorite chair. He was a huge fan of football and although he would probably deny it, I know he loved watching the Cowboys. He also enjoyed watching Clint Eastwood movies, especially his westerns. His greatest joy, however, was when family would gather. In his younger years, he would be the center of attention, grilling, but as he got older, he cherished being a spectator of the joyous ruckus of grandkids running around, or sitting at the table and being a storyteller of his life’s journeys, or often, just listening and relishing the moment.

Everyone who knew Dad felt his big heart and giving nature. He was always checking in on his kids, making sure they were ok, asking about the grandchildren, and if there was anything that needed to be fixed.  Dad’s love language was that of service and he jumped at the chance to help someone with a project.  In fact, he drove around with every kind of tool you could possibly imagine in the back of his car ready to tackle whatever it was. Afterall, he would say “it was already broken, so no harm done in trying to fix it.”

George was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers, Daniel and Frank. He is survived by his life-partner, Irma Rodriguez; his ex-wives, Emma Gonzalez, their daughters, Sylvia (deceased) & her husband, Joe Munoz [Marco, Dante, Celeste, Liz, and Joey], Linda & her spouse, Terry Waldron [Monica, Manny, Esai], and Georgia & her husband, Greg Melancon [Joey, Adrian, Victoria, Aaron];  Maria Guadalupe Martinez, their sons, George & his wife, Leticia [Alondra, Jared, Jeremy, Ryan], and Daniel & his partner Susie [Jayden, Kailyn, and Priscilla]; and Alicia Alton, their children, Irma [Karina, Katherine, and Kristine], George [Matthew, Luke], Sophia [Emily, Madison], and Elizabeth & her husband, Brandon Ebel [Samantha, Rowen]; and son, Christopher & his wife, Cori; twenty-seven great grandchildren, and 4 great- great grandchildren; and his brother, Oscar Ozuna & his wife, Ofelia [Napoleon, Tiffany and Adriel].
