Donna - Antonio Ponce Hernandez, 95, passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Winsor Nursing Home in Weslaco, TX. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Hawkins Funeral Home in Donna.
Antonio Ponce Hernandez, 95, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2023, at the Windsor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Weslaco, Texas.
He was born May 15, 1928, to †Francisco Hernandez and †Daria Ponce Hernandez in Querétaro, Mexico. Upon crossing into the United States in the 1950’s, he worked as a laborer, specifically working in constructing the highways throughout Texas, and with local constructions companies, Fitzgerald Construction and Lopez Construction. He later decided to turn to farming and planted crops year-round such as tomatoes, corn, squash, okra, turnips, broccoli, watermelons, cotton, and grain. He sold his various crops to valley wide produce companies and stores. He also raised cattle and pigs which he took to the market. He could be seen around town in his tractors, farming and cleaning out fields, and occasionally was called to assist in pulling vehicles out of muddy dirt roads.
He was preceded in death by his wife, †Maria R. Hernandez, his daughter †Catalina, his parents †Francisco and †Daria Hernandez, and †his brothers, †Benito, †Angel, †Bartolo, †Bonifacio, †Luis, †Emiliano, †Narciso, †Epimenio, †Eustolio, and sister, †Petra. He is survived by his children, Francisco, Elvira, Antonio, Jr. (Oralia), Jovita and Dario Hernandez, his grandchildren, Enedelia (Orlando) Prado, Amanda, Francisco, Jr. and Alejandro Hernandez, and one great-grandchild, Joaquin D. Prado.
Pallbearers will be family members: sons, Francisco, Antonio, Jr., and Dario; grandson,Francisco Jr., granddaughter Amanda and nephew, Enrique Hernandez.
The Hernandez family thanks the Retama/Orchard Park/Windsor Nursing Home for the wonderful care they bestowed on their father by the staff.
